Back pain does not always come from one dramatic moment — a heavy lift or an awkward fall. More often it builds up quietly from small, everyday habits repeated day after day, week after week, until one morning you notice a stiffness or ache that seems to have appeared from nowhere. The good news is that because these habits are the cause, changing them is also the cure. Once you learn to spot the everyday culprits, most are surprisingly easy to fix.
Your spine is built to move. It copes remarkably well with variety — bending, twisting, lifting, resting — but it does not cope well with the same sustained position held for hours on end. When you hold one posture too long, certain muscles stay switched on and fatigue, others switch off and weaken, and the joints and discs bear uneven load. Repeat that pattern daily and the tissues gradually adapt in ways that leave you stiff, sore and more vulnerable to strain. This is why the habits below matter so much: individually harmless, collectively they reshape how your back feels.
For many people, the single biggest contributor is the workstation. Screens set too low pull the head forward; chairs without support let the lower back slump; and the sheer number of hours spent seated means even a slightly poor setup does real damage over time. Raising your screen so the top is roughly at eye level, supporting your lower back, keeping your feet flat, and — most importantly — getting up to move every 30 to 45 minutes can transform how your back feels by the end of the day.
We look down at our phones for hours, and every centimetre the head tilts forward multiplies the effective load on the neck. Over time this contributes to neck pain, upper-back tension and headaches. The fix is simple: bring the phone up towards eye level rather than dropping your head down to it, and give your neck regular breaks.
You do not need to overhaul your life. A handful of small, sustainable changes usually does the trick:
Changing your habits prevents a great deal of back and neck pain, but if discomfort has already set in and is not easing, it is worth getting it checked. Persistent pain, pain that radiates into an arm or leg, or symptoms that disturb your sleep deserve professional attention. If your pain is severe, follows an injury, or comes with numbness or weakness, see your GP promptly.
If back or neck pain has already taken hold, our chiropractors can help find the underlying cause, relieve the pain, and give you the practical guidance to keep it from coming back. Book an appointment with the Everwell team today.
